I went out for a while yesterday. It took me two hours to find the very narrow depth they were holding in. 9'-9.5' was the key. The Crappie were still scattered with small groups around brush. I'm going to try to coin a phrase by saying I was "Crappie Creeping". What I did was simply start upwind of a northern bank with wind in my face. I was letting the wind push me while using two rods with a 1/4oz jig on each and watching the front graph maintaining the target depth. This method is more than a controlled drift as I kept my lines very close to vertical, thus the "Creeping" as I was barely moving backwards with the wind. The wind wasn't very strong as I was hiding under a steep north bank. This method allows me to thoroughly work the bank at my target depth coming across any scattered fish. It also allows me to pull forward when I hang instead of having to back the boat up.
I ended up with about 25 fish caught with a few keepers here and there. Crappie Creeping is a more defined way to slow troll.
So the next time you're on the water and can't seem to find the fish, they're still there but could be actively feeding at a specific depth right off the bottom. Try a little"Crappie Creeping" and see if it won't work for you too!
