I broke a long, dry, no-fishing spell last Saturday on a coastal river in northeast North Carolina. I enjoyed a beautiful day there in God’s country, and the pretty-slow-bite that accompanied it:
Although slow, the bite was an interesting mix of the good, the ugly and not so bad: I boated 11 crappie, threw back four dinks, and missed two more. Some of the crappie were very nice, like a couple that were just a hair under 13”, and this one that measured almost 15":
In between nice fish and no other bites, I caught 5 Grendel’s--including one that broke the middle section of a 14’ B&M PST! I think that my 6 lb. test leader should have snapped before that rod section did. I also pulled in one cat that was about 16” long. All fish were caught spider-rigging baby shad/minnow combos at 5-6’ deep in water that was 8 – 10’ deep. There was an aquatic bloom underway, and I had to clean lines and lures frequently. The water temperature was 53 degrees in the morning, and warmed up to 57 in the afternoon. Here is what I brought home for dinners:
Oops! I almost forgot...look what I found. You don't see these much, anymore:
Nice. Looks like the Cashie. I am in Windsor NC. Went last week around noon. got a few small ones. Any day on the Cashie is a good day for me. Thanks for the post
