We fished mid-river on Gibson Rocky Point area, was no problem catching bait shad was as thick as an Asian Carp video literally jumping out of the water on both sides of the boat when we pulled into the cove at RP. The four of us had 8 rods in the water and 10 jugs free drifting we fished all night from rocky point up to mission bend never could get a hot bite going picked up about 1 or 2 every couple of hours. Mostly throw backs but did manage 4 that went about a 1 1/2 pound so enough for a meal on the lake but nothing more. I have heard a lot said about night fishing during a big moon I don't know if that was the problem but it's the only thing I can point a finger at as to why we did not do any better.

Were you drift fishing or anchoring. Another thing right now is a lot of people think in the heat of the summer the fish are in the deeper channels. That's not the case all the time. We are having our best luck drifting 10 to 17 fow. Water temps are running in the high 80's. Last thing is not all shad are created equal. Some days the fish may want a bigger shad and other days a smaller one. Just have to bait up with a smorgasbord and see what they want that day. I have seen them hit big shad heads on some days and not touch them the next day. Keeping the bait fresh is the biggest thing. If you don't have a bait tank to keep them alive you can cut them on a fillet board and put them in a zip lock bag on ice. I know you may know a lot of this Lonnie but others may not. In my opinion if a shad dies and you cut him and he doesn't bleed it's time to get fresh bait. Cut shad will last a couple days on ice if the tail section is cut off.

I totally agree, I'm hoping we can make this thread more active and others will post with there reports, share info and ask any question they may have. I'm always looking to learn and share information I love my crappie fishing but if you've never been pulled down by a big old Blue or felt the shake of monster Flat Head then you just don't know what your missing!

We drifted some spot locked some, fish some flats and went to the channel, there was four of us and we used live perch, fresh shad that we caught which was about 3 1/2" size and we also cut some frozen large 10" shad using heads, gut pockets and chunks. The fresh 3" did the best job. We put our live perch on some jugs looking for flatheads but did get a channel and couple of small blues. Lost a jug to log jam, recovered the jug but had to cut the line so not sure what we got there but could have been a flathead that got back into the logs.

I'm going to a new part of the Verdigris river Friday. I dont have a net so going to catch some bluegill and whatever sunfish will bite and use them for live and cut bait. I really need a cast net to get shad.

You can get a red horn cast net at walmart for less than 30.00. Just don't go to big until you learn how to throw them. A 4 ft is a good place to start. I carry 8 and 10 footers in my boat and use my 6 ft 98 percent of the time and get all the shad I need. Drifted for a couple hours this morning before it got really hot and kept a few. They wanted the small 3 inch shad today. Didn't catch a fish on big shad
