I've got a ABU 6500 but use it mostly in salt water, where I seldom go anymore. In the past I've used my ABU 5000 on cat's. These days I'm using A Daiwa Millionaire, nice reel! Also getting ready to try a Shakespeare SKP 2000C I've had for years and never used. But then I've never caught big cats either. I think the size of cat's your hoping for would determine the equipment you'd use. On the reels above, I like 10# line. Probably not strong enough for really big cat's. If I was targeting really big one's, like over 10#, I'd use my ABU 6500 and probably 15# line. I really don't care for heavy lines. But then I used to love braid and I think it can get fairly heavy and stay limp. You getting those huge cat's I only read about, all bet's are off!

I really like my ABU 6500. Think you'll probably like your's. I don't think reel's from 30 yers ago are as good as we have now. I do think we have very fond memories of them. I loved my old Michell half bail reels but to be honest they were not up to to todays standard. Same with my old Zebco direct drive level wind. My step dad really liked the old Daiwi spinning reels. Never cared for them myself but today's Daiwi's are a different dog!

I have a 6000c that I bought in 1979 and a 5000 that was bought while in high school . The fact the 6500 catfish model has a metal lock on the handle nut is an improvement which was the issue on my 6000c3 . threads got damaged and would not hold . Had some Daiwi "Millionaire", they were good reels back then also . I never owned a spinning reel til I got involved with ultra-light .Got an old martin fly reel that was made in the 60's when spring steel was real .

Coach, for the really big ones, I use 70# braid and large open face reels, also 8' rods. LOL
