Thread: Kastking pontus

A buddy of mine who is on a budget is considering getting this reel. Anyone know anything about it?

Well I can't find the thread I was looking for. About the Kast King level wind rel. I ordered one just to see. $45 also ordered a Berkley Cherrywood 7' rod for it, $18. They got here today.Put 12# Ande on the reel. Reel is a Rover 40. Took it out and cast a bit with it and not one complaint. Smooth and cast's well, much better than I expected it would. Pretty good size reel, about the size of my ABU 6500. Going to try float fishing for cats with it. Read about that and sounds pretty good idea. Have a 3/4oz ball on the bottom tied on to one of those three way swivels. about 10" from the ball to the swivel. Then about 12" off the swivel to one of those big round hook's,don't know what they are called, a first for me but look's like it about just right for hooking on bait. Got to thinking about it and it kinda looks like a deal a walleye guide called a bottom walker. Well doesn't look like one but looks like it will work the same! Now this reel is a sample of one and hasn't been used a bunch yet. But for $45 I think I should get more than my money's worth out of it. No real idea if it is just a good model or a model that is just a pretty nice reel for only $45! Only time will tell. Thing about level wind reel's is there are some nice reels that are pretty hard to work, I just replaced one. And there are reels everyone that used them rave about, to expensive for my blood though. Want to try bait casting on the inexpensive side, go for it. Even if this Rover 40 just last four or five years, fine with me, don't have a car payment into it. I might say the same thing about rod's. This $18 Berkley a lot of guy's would never look at, call it cheap. Better word might be inexpensive! I have two now, a Shakespere, Ocuma, couple Garcia's and couple Diawi's. I like the way they feel and I like the way the look!If your a tight wad like I am, the only you'll find out if that inexpensive stuff will work is try it yourself. Ya know, a $100 rod slamed in a car door breaks just as quickly as an $18 dollar rod!

Something I forgot to mention about this Kast King Rover 40, no user direction's! At least there wasn;t with ine, just a part's list you need a magnifying glass to read! I still think for $45 it's worth a try. Speaking of inexpensive, my first level wind was a Zebco direct drive. Thing it cost about ten buck's at the Rod and Gun Club on the Air Base in Sembach Germany. Got it there about 1967. I could still use it today in fact even still have it. It made it through a house fire my first Ambassator 5000 didn't survive! Of course that old 5000 had about 30 yrs on it when it bit the dust!
