I went on eBay and picked up some ancient baitcast reel in great working condition. You can pick one up as cheap as $5.

Be aware that casting a level wind reel can be a challenge at first. Your probably gonna go long long before your actually ready and will discover the birds nest! Your spincast will probably cast just as far, just get a longer rod to cast with and finer line. That new braided stuff is super fine line but a real pain to tie knot's with, mine always slipped. I have use only bait cast reel's for a pong pong time then last year used a light spinning reel to try for crappie, worked great. Seem's to me that if you let the line reel n loose is where the bird nest's came from with spinning reels. keep in mind, from a spinning reel the line simply falls off the reel and the bait pulls it out. With a level wind, when you cast the bait pulls the line off the spool but also makes the spool turn. Spool stop's and line quits coming out. You'll need to learn to control the spool with your thumb. Early on with the level wind, learn to toss the lure short distances and work up to longer casts. Learn to adjust it also. Release the spool with your level wind and thumb holding the spool. Take your thumb off the spool and let the lure drop to the floor pulling the spool on it's own. The lure should stop at the floor with out over running the spool. As you learn you can loosen it up more and still be in good shape but, learn to control the spool with your thumb. Level winds are great, my favorite's by a long shot!

$40, I'd try that reel from Amazon. I use mostly bait casting reels and mostly ABU's. 2500 is a nice light reel, small. 5000 is my work horse and couple 6500's used mostly in salt water and don't get there much. Have my original Zebco direct drive, learned with it. That was hard! Got a Quantrum year or so ago, really light and small. I tried spin cast years ago and never did care for them. Have fished a lot with spinning reels but last 15 or so years, maybe more, not so much. Like the ultra light reels and rods. But mostly I try to find a way to use my bait casting reels, love them. For fourty bucks, try it! I've got a Millionaire that is really nice. Have a Shakespere I've had for years and never put line on, just to many reels I guess but mostly level winds.

Well got my new bait caster from Amazon yesterday. I'm a prime member and buy a lot of stuff there so I build up point's buying stuff. The reel I got is a Daiwa low profile. Sold for a bit over $56 but I got it for free with point's I have built up. Use it to replace a handy little Zebco low profile that I can't cast much at all. Put on the Daiwa and everything changed. As easy to cast as my ABU's and my Millionaire. Zebco can run and hide now. Ordered is on Saturday and it was delivered the next Monday!

I second the 5000s which I use for catfish and carp. The ones with the clicker cast well and are good bait reels, that you can set, turn on the clicker and punch the free spool. The clicker tells you when you have a run. The ones I have were made in Sweden and those last for ever.

Anyone know how the OP's doing with his bait caster? I got one of those inexpensive Kastking round reels, think it's called a rover. I am really surprised at how nice it really is especially for $45! Cast like a dream! About the size of my ABU 6500, pretty big but really smooth! I guess you never really know without the test of time though. We'll see how it goes. I like it so well I just ordered a new Kastking light spinning reel. Ordered a better rod for my Shimano 2000 spinning reel but got antsi waiting two days for it to get her so went out and bought a new one in town. Left me with a spinning rod without a reel! Be interesting to see it. I don't buy high end reels or rods. I think all three of my ABU's were under $70, my Millionaire I got on an out of business sale for $25! Folks looking to get into new reels and rods I think do themselve bad thinking they need some high dollar equipment they can't really afford. What they really need is something that works for them. They can always up grade down the road if they want to.

Not sure but I've made leaps and bounds on my baitcasting skills. I've been practicing and prefer it over my spinning reels for bass. Crappie I still use a small spinning, but man I love the fire out of my Lews Speed Spool now!
