    Default Boat Wiring

    Good evening,

Have been reading posts going back several years and researching all things boat wiring, hope you all can point me in the right direction.

I am currently building out a 2001 22' SunTracker pontoon boat, it sports a 3.0 liter Mercury stern drive with the large (26") pontoons and a full length aluminum deck. My plans for this boat are to turn it into a fishing boat with the capability of long term camping, I've acquired an rv camp stove, and am currently sourcing an rv refrigerator.

So far I've replaced the junk battery with a group 24 start battery and a group 27 house battery, from there I've routed the batteries through a Blue Sea 9001E E-Series 1/2/both/off battery switch. Today I ordered a NOCO Genius GENPRO 10X4 automatic charger (allowing for battery system expansion) and surface mount plug.

My idea of shore power is limited to plugging in at my house and a Ryobi 2200 peak power generator, the generator is for emergency charging of the batteries as needed as well as firing up the coffee pot and bean grinder while on the water.

I have read where it's been recommended to install an inline green wire box (galvanic isolator) for shore power while moored at the dock, is this something that is needed in my situation also?

Electrically the tachometer is not reading correctly as it seems to wildly fluctuate while the boat is in use, the fuel sending unit is grounded to the fuel filler nozzle and the hydrolic trim pistons show corrosion at the soft metal seal retainers?

The boat is new to me, I was raised on boats as a kid but this is my first plunge.

Future plans include a permanent hard top with full drop down enclosure, Yard out the unnecessary wrap around seating and install Buyers under mount diamond plate tool boxes for storage cabinets, also to continue reading up on posts so as to bring the wiring into shape, crawled under the console and it's a mess of wires everywhere.

Thanks for any input and help you all have to offer.

That hard top would be a perfect place for solar panels.

You had me at camp stove and coffee grinder.

I am not familiar with shore power.

The only advice I have is run the grounds to a dedicated bus bar. Don't use the frame as a ground. nono

I saw one come up for sale last month that had a 4.3 litter V6. 245hp on a 22' pontoon. It didn't last but 6 hrs before the listing said sold.

Like was said above don't use the frame as ground but the frame needs to be grounded
