Default Simple Question: 12 v vs. 24 v MK Powerdrive

I have a Lund Pro Pike, 16', powered by a 30 hp Evinrude.
    Boat wt = 430 lbs
Fishing partner and me wt= A little north of the boat wt ;-)
I plan to get a bow mounted tm ( now have one on the transom ), with Spot Lock.
I feel 12 volts would be sufficient; am I wrong? Any advantages to going with 24 v?
    Thanks

I was just reading a thread over on a walleye forum and saw a post from a guy who has a Lund similar to mine. He uses 24volts and gave a good argument for doing so. I troll for crappie in the summer, but also troll for trout and walleye. In the past I have used a 4 hp kicker. Presently the bow of my Lund is naked, with my trolling motor on the stern. Would it be unreasonable to assume that if I went with a 24 volt MK ipilot that I could not use the kicker at all? I usually fish 5-6 hours a day. Thanks

I’ve never heard anyone complain that their TM was too big. Too small yes, but never too big. Think of a day when the fishing is good and the wind picks up to the point where your TM won’t keep up. You will be kicking yourself for getting a TM too small. Just my opinion (been there, done that).

A 12V 55lb will be plenty for that boat. I used a 40lb Powerdrive on a 17' aluminum bass boat (~1200 lbs not including passengers) for a while, and it worked fine.

Going to a 24V will give you more run time with two batteries, but that would be true for a 12V as well, with two batteries in parallel. It's up to you to decide whether the extra expense of the 24V is worth it to you.

In heavy winds you may want to fire up the kicker for thrust, and use the TM to steer. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any issue just using the TM.

I have 17 wareagle with 55 Terrova. Does a fine job 85% of the time. But I run 2 batteries for it to get the time out of it when trolling. On your boat you would be more than happy with the 80. Like Atimm said you could use kicker and steer with 55 which is what I do when pulling cranks with my big motor. But with the 80 you could lose the kicker and the weight associated with it. Set the ipilot and pay attention to fishing instead of driving.
One thing of importance is get the 60” shaft. Run it as low in water as you can.

Cray, getting the 24 with a long shaft makes sense. I particularly like the idea of getting rid of the kicker and saving the wt.
