    Default finding fish in winter

Lately I have been doing a lot of scouting and marking waypoints for structure, brushpiles etc. but have found very few fish willing to bite. What I have found is huge schools of bait in deeper water. Are there likely to be crappie feeding on them and what are some good methods for catching them?

Shad on some lakes move to the creeks in winter with Crappie following . Don't overlook shallow water on some lakes all year .

i fish a particular lake here in central Ohio, all winter, when not locked up. I fish from bank and in a shallow cove that borders the creek channel that feeds this draw down lake. I fish no more than 4’ - 6’ deep with a float, all winter and do very good all winter. This area attracts the shad and they seem to stay shallow here in particular spot pretty much all winter so yes don’t overlook shallows

Boy yesterday would have been a great day to look in the shallow areas like you suggest, if I wasn't quarantined because my son in law caught the covid. Good thing is my grand daughter is quarantined with us. There is a lot to learn about crappie fishing.

Like everything else, fish like favor a certain body temp, especially the young bait fish. They'll move to the shallows even on cold sunny days.
Like us, a ray of sunshine feels like bliss when things are cold. Plus shallows will warm up a bit faster during the day. As the sun starts to go down all bets are off.

Those huge bait balls in deep water have numerous species of predators under them and even in them .
But to be sure we find those crappie to be real challenge.
Not sure why but getting them to bite is a chore.
Seems like the smaller groups of bait and fish a bit shallower are the ones that might play .
