Default Hi Viz line... Yes or No?

I’m new to crappie fishing and fishing Lake Griffin in Central Florida. Still learning how to best rig etc. I have vision issues and would use hi viz line if it works okay. I’ve seen people who argue strongly on both sides of the hi viz issue. Crappie are line shy... crappie are not line shy... etc. I’d appreciate what y’all have experienced with this issue.

Welcome to Crappie.com and Lake Griffin. Tough Lake. But They've been biting as of late. I see lots of boats around Picciola Point, and I've caught some there too. As far a line goes, high vis is fine, I use it all the time. Better to see the bite, better to tie with. It's the only way to go IMHO.

And if this means anything, Mr. Crappie, Wally Marshall, only uses high visibility line. Of course his own brand of line, but considering he sells clear and high visibility, it does say something.

My take on the question is .... yes, no, maybe, sometimes

But seriously, I haven't seen any decrease in the number of strikes I get using hi-vis line over the times I've used any other "color" of line. And when asked don't I think the fish can see the line ... my answer is "yes, they can, but so what ?"
In my estimation, except under the extreme conditions of gin clear water, the fish are not likely to be concerned about a thin thread of color nearby. You ever see a submerged tree or brushpile that DIDN'T have line tangled in it ?? If you have, then it likely hasn't been fished all that much. Fish are much more likely to be spooked by noise, boat/angler shadow or movement, or other things than they are of a strand of line. They're not looking to eat that strand, but they might be looking to eat what's on the end of it.

Another perspective : if you can't see the line, it doesn't always matter if the fish can or cannot see it, because if they do bite your lure ... you may not know it in time to do anything about it.

This site is no different. You’ll hear members say the exact same things.

If you have doubts, use hi viz line plus a short mono/fluoro leader: best of both worlds.

Welcome to the forum. I have been using Stren Hi Viz crappie line for several years no problem. Also, as has been mentioned you can see it for knot tying and for me that is a big deal.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I’ve put some hi vis on one of my reels and will take out 2 rods tomorrow... one hi vis and one flours. With vision issues tying the hi vis was sooo much easier. We’re still getting the crappie in deeper (14’). Waiting for them to move in to the weeds and pads around Lakeside Village where we dock.

Welcome friend! I use Mr Crappie line 4 lb test and it seems to work well. I am new to this as well but have caught a few seeing my line pop vs feeling a thump. Good luck!
