    Default Reel maintenance question

I have been having trouble when working on my spinning reels. The reels of mine that I like the most right now and get the most wear are Shimano Catana 1000's. I don't really perform any kind of routine maintenance on them, but eventually have to work on them when they start feeling like they are sticking when I'm reeling.

I took a couple apart recently to clean them thoroughly. With one of them, I ended up cleaning as much of the old grease as I could out of it, because it was all dirty. I tried to put a decent amount of grease on the moving parts or where gears met. The reel is working ok, but doesn't feel 100% right. When it is really cold now, it seems to move slower which my other reels aren't doing.

Does anyone have a guide for regular spinning reel maintenance, plus a good detailed guide of how much grease to take out, where and how much to re apply, and where to oil? I haven't been able to figure it out. Thanks.

The proper way to do it is to completely disassemble it and give it a good cleaning. Grease the gears and slide contact points. Oil the bearings. Of course drag grease on the drag washers.

Clean with DAWN dishwashing soap, grease lightly. Sounds like you over-did

Never heard that use for Dawn before. Dawn blue is a REALLY good dishwashing detergent, so it makes sense. I use it regularly to clean my glasses. Got that tip from my optometrist - that’s what they use. Blue, unscented only.

I am just as bad on cleaning my reels, I just decide on a day to clean and lube, whether they need it or not.
    P.S - I love the Catana 1000 reels also.
