Just curious if these are generally considered as acceptable or something to be avoided? Eagle Claw is the brand that I'm familiar with.

And if so, my advice is don't bother. All that hardware isn't necessary.
I've never used them for crappie, but I use them for bottom fish. I'll use them in Coos Bay on the Oregone coast. I'll put a gulp minnow or half gulp sand worm on each hook. 1 to 4 ounces of lead on the bottom depending on the tide. Most of the rock fish will be blacks around 2 pounds. A real good one will be 4 to 5 pounds. A couple years ago my hooked a halibut on one, had it on for a few runs before it snapped off.
On occasion I have found these really cheap in price . They will hold a minnow and will work .
