    Default Bait identification, please


    I really ought to know, but I don't, can someone tell me what kind of fish this is? I caught a bass that spit it up....

    (I immediately put it on that jig and it was stripped on the first cast)

    Or possibly a River Herring ?? (definitely a "shad" of some sort or another)

    Does the body of water it came from empty into the ocean ??

    no sir; freshwater lake, 1900 acres

    I was jig fishing my crappie structure


    never seen one before; now I'm thinking that these are the bait clouds I see on graph



    ...gonna 'match the hatch' later today/tonight; finger's crossed!

    Yeah ... I'm pretty sure they'd be the bait clouds you see. Maybe you can find out if your F&W folks stocked a particular type of Shad in that lake. That would rule out any look-alikes, if there's only one specie stocked ... but, illegal introduction of other species might also be going on.

    Kinda looks like a Alewife, too .... but, many of the different Shad species are pretty hard to tell apart.

    shad / herring family no doubt , hard to tell positive .
    freshly chewed takes away some of the visual markings and such .
    the eye seems quite large , that might indicate something .
    dont know much about baitfish up that way
    sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales
