Default Any Reason Not to Use This Line?

    Hi, all,

New member here, and new crappie fisherman as well. I only have ever got them incidentally while bass or bluegill fishing. The past two days, I have got 30 each day (all caught and released), all in the 9-13" range. So much fun!!

Anyways, my question is in regards to line. I have an extra 7' UL rod laying around and want to get it setup for casting jigs, such as marabou jigs and BeetleSpins. After much research, I have decided I want to run braid on this rod, probably HiViz, as I am a "line watcher". I will run this to a leader of 4lb fluoro. I often see setups like this using 8-10lb or even smaller braid.

The thing is, I already have a spool of 15lb HiViz yellow PowerPro braid laying around from one of my finesse bass fishing setups. Is there any reason I couldn't put 15lb braid on my crappie setup? Do I lose anything over not going to the smaller lines? Casting distance isn't much of an issue.

That line is going to be same diameter as 8 pound mono or less so should be no problem to use it at all. Casting distance may be even better than 8 mono. Small leader should work fine. Might need to practice the knots to marry the two lines together to make sure they will stay tied and braid not cut into leader. I use braid on everything and use a double uni with 6 wraps each. But about 10 is light as I go on my leaders.

I am also a braid guy for all of my bass fishing. I currently use and am comfortable with the Alberto Knot for all of my bass fishing. In the process of converting one of my panfish setups over, I just wanted to know if the 15lb I already had would be too much. Needed some reinforcement that I didn't need to buy new line, haha!

Why 10lb test on the leader? Are you fishing heavy cover? I've been throwing straight mono in 4lb test on all of my rods so far and haven't had an issue, but I'm in pretty open water. Now you've got me curious; is there a reason I should bump it up?

Most of mine are spider rigging and long lining jigs or cranks. Where I fish I’m fishing for crappie with a 12 inch min length limit. 4-6 just does not work for me. For pan fish like bream I’d use the smaller leader. Want to add that I d use it for casting jigs at times but fishing around brush and stake beds is another reason for using heavier leader.
