    Question Spider Rigging Question

I am going to start spider rigging and had a question. Can all the rods be the same length or on a 4 pole set-up I would need 4 different lengths? Also are10 ft rods ok or do they need to be at least 12? I appreciate all the help I get from the members everytime I post something.

They can all be the same size. The further you get the tips away from the boat, the better. I use at least 12 , but perfer 14 footers.

When I started about 3 years ago I had 12's and 14's. On 3 different trips in a row, I used 4 poles, 2 12's in one holder and 2 14's in other holder. I kept count of which rods caught fish, 75% were caught on 14's. Been using 14's ever since. Wound rather use 12's because they are easier to handle, shorter, lighter, 2 piece vs 3. Just have more confidence with the 14's.

Most Spider Riggers I know are using 16' rods ... even those that started out with 14'ers. One factor that has to be taken into account is how much rod length is beyond the front of the boat. Where you can or "have to" place the rod holders can be a factor in rod lengths used.

I Push jigs/cranks so I can utilize varying lengths of rods on my boat, but if I were to seriously take up Spider Rigging ... I'd probably opt for 16' rods (on account of my boat having a fairly pointed bow, so I lose about 2ft of distance from holders to trolling motor).

I have 12’s 14’s and. Couple of 16’s. A 17 ft stick steer boat and sit back a bit from front. I have found for me the 14’s are the most manageable when fishing by myself most of the time. 12’s work good also. 16’s start to get a bit unweldie by yourself in a shorter boat. Little shorter pole is also easier to learn on.

12' poles are fine, with 14' being a little better. I like medium tips for my fishing, I also use 1/4oz weights and 2 jigs or minnows below. I do not troll above .2mph, use the troll motor as little as possible. " NO NOISE" and Nibbles or Slab Sauce. Be patient.

I started out with twelves now used Southern Crappie 16 footers. Lot to go into the situation is the length of your boat. The 16 footers would be very hard to use if your boat don't have good length.

    Size matters!
    I say that because it’s two-fold.
First, it’s easier to learn with a shorter rod. I started with three mr crappie 10’ers from academy. $24.99 each with reels. Trying to manage 3 poles @ 10’ each was tough, especially when bite was on. But you eventually catch on then can’t wait to find a deal to buy longer.
Second part- as everyone mentioned above, further from the boat is always better. Spooks fish much less.

I love spider rigging and invested in longer, better quality poles and gear. My son doesn’t like it and would rather single pole.
Make sure you like it before investing too much as you usually will not recoup your initial costs if you don’t like and sell out.
