So go. The perfect time to fish is whenever you can.

Not sure about the water conditions (i.e.: temperature, clarity, forage base, etc.) in your neck of the woods, but I can tell you this much. If I had a chance to go fishing (all our water up here are frozen solid!) you can bet I'd be out there in a heart beat! Never wait on the fish. Test the waters and try various presentations. You will just never know what you will catch unless you try.

This has been my gauge for years. When the lilacs start blooming the crappie are on the banks. Your mileage may vary when should i go bank fishing

I also hear when the dogwoods bloom.
I go year round though! Don’t miss an opportunity, just go.

Personally, I'd go now. Look for a bank that's fairly deep (steep angled) and on the West side of the lake, then look for any downed trees coming off that bank (bigger tree the better).
When I was in your position, many years ago, I caught many a Crappie in that very scenario ... Dec - Feb
Reason for the West bank location ... gets Sun thru most of the day, water warms there first
Reason for the steep bank & deadfall tree ... shelter/cover, varying depths, ambush point, possible feeding area for baitfish, possible sheltering area for smaller fish or even fry of other spawning fish, possible staging point for Crappie during pre-spawn & spawn period

It also allows you to cast to deeper water (& cover) than when on a flat or gently sloping (shallow) bank.

Check out the state lakes or any for that matter that have piers . (access to deeper water ) Bridges over water as well as old railroad trestle .
