Default When to change it up?

So 2019 will be my first full year of crappie fishing. Im curious to how often you change jig colors, jig styles and adjust your depth if you are not getting bites? 5-10 casts? Every few minutes? Also i will be mainly fishing from shore. Im looking forward to learning alot from the fine folks at crappie.com!

I "might" change colors a couple of times a day, but usually don't have to "IF" I find out where & how deep they're holding. My partner may change colors 6-10 times a day, unless I'm burning them up .... and then he just puts on the same color.

I might even start out with a "carrot" shaped body, then switch to a shad body, or vice versa ... but, for a real change of "style", I'm more apt to lay the jig rod down and pick up the Road Runner rod.

If I were to have to fish from the bank ... I'd still be using weedless jigheads with my plastics. And I would only throw Road Runners to cover the top few feet of water ... just like I do when fishing from a boat.

Thanks for the reply! I forgot to add how often do you actually move locations if you cant get anything to bite after changing jigs/depths etc.

I don't often fish more than 20mins on a spot before moving, if I'm not getting bites. It usually takes about that long to cover the depths and angles of presentation before I'm convinced to move. I usually have a "game plan" (from previous experiences) of spots to try, or banks to work down, given the time of year & the particular lake ... sort of a "milk run" of spots in close proximity that I can hit & run until I find the depth and cover type the fish are using at that time. That's from a boat, though.

Bank fishing is tougher in that regard, because access to areas of a bank that have cover within casting range can be limited, off limits to foot traffic (private property), or just simply very difficult to get to or fish from. And if those areas are few in number, they can become crowded with other anglers very quickly.

I absolutely love trying new things and changing colors & body styles during a day's fishing. Especially if one color is knocking their socks off - that's the best time try something new - to see if in fact it's that color/style, or if it's just that they are "on the bite" and will hit anything.

We also move a lot with side pulling style of trolling over the main basins. In our waters up here, it's rare to have a school hold in one spot for very long. With little in the way of structure or breaks on structure, these fish move all over the main basins chasing baitfish. Pretty difficult to pinpoint one spot over any other (and we've tried!). So this presentation works for us.

Colors not as important to the fish as much as fishermen . Most times any dark color with chartreuse .

You could go to YouTube and search “winter crappie” for now “pre spawn” in a few weeks .... and there are a lot of good instructional videos.

I love chartreuse for bass. Tried it on crappie last week and never got the first hit. Switched to darker color's and didn't seem to matter what I threw. Even had an orange grub they ate up. Finished up with black and a skirt rather than a tail, don't know what the skirt is called. it was the best.

I focus on depth and speed. When i am satisfied I've covered them all, I move. I don't focus on lure style or color at all. Depth and speed trumps everything else.
