    Default Chevy lumina brake lines (2001)


    I'm replacing the brake lines, had holes in two of them, replacing all the metal ones. It was quite a treat removing them(sarcasm intended) it's going to be even more fun trying to weasel the new ones in. Is it possible to use hose? Or at least something flexible? I'll secure the snot out of it.
    I'll use metal if needed.
    Theirs short sections of hose/tubing going to the endpoints.
    Why was rustable metal used in first place? It's an accident waiting to happen.

    The reason steel is used is to keep it from expanding under the amount of pressure that is applied by the master cylinder. Use what the factory did. The little bit of expansion in the factory rubber line extensions is factored into the design of the system.

    Chevy knows they had an issue from 1999 to 2004. Most of their vehicles had issues with brake line deterioration. Most people just didn't keep the vehicle that long to notice the issues. Many of us with those model year trucks have had to have the brake lines replaced. On the trucks, it was two fold. Bad lines and bad design in the way they were routed (outside of the frame rail). I do know that some guys went to braided line systems however that becomes a pricy ordeal. I'm with Cray, replace the lines with metal. If memory serves me, there was something to do with bubbles being created when using large amounts of rubber lines to produce brake lines.

    I was afraid that would be the answer. Had to ask, would have kicked myself later had I found out otherwise.

    Bought two 25' rolls of brake lines, two tubing benders (plyer type and standard) and a flaring tool. Already had flare nut wrenches from replacing the power steering rack. Replaced all four lines from the abs actuator to the flex line on each wheel. Wasn't as bad a job as I thought it would be.
