Get the 5.3......I am on my third one......best gas mileage of any half ton truck out there. I traded again last month, 2015 GMC 4X4 crew cab......love it. I traded my 08 in, I loved it too
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I have the 5.3 and it has great power and decent gas mileage. I worked as a mechanic for over 40 years and from my experience with the smaller engine trying to pull the same weight it will run in more of a strain all the time and therefore get worse gas mileage than the larger engine.

You will work the smaller engine harder. Another thing to look at is how hard are they going to kick you when your trade the smaller motor.

Anything from 2008 up will get you 17 to 23 MPG with a 5.3 depending on the year--the newer the better mileage---been a mechanic 45 years and I say get the 5.3===

A smaller engine will usually drink more fuel then a bigger engine, all other things being equal. EG gear, load, driving style.
