    Default Dash Gauges quit

Thought I would try you guys before I jumped in with both feet .

2003 GMC Yukon with V8. The check engine light came on this morning so I went at lunch to my local AutoZone to get it checked. The guy checked the code and said it was P0171 ( fuel system lean ) . We went through a few things to check and I'm ready to go back to work. Fired the truck up , pulled out into traffic and head that away. I glanced down at my dash and noticed that none of the guages were working . No speedo , tach , gas , oil, temp : nothing. . I did check one fuse under the hood ( egn3 I think) and it was good. I haven't had time to do anymore checking so I thought I would post on here to see ifin any of you guys had had something similar happen and what was the fix.

    Thanks,
    Thereheis

If I remember right there will be a fuse...on the left side dash...under a small panel. It will be a minifuse and will say (cluster) I believe.

That code is for a lean condition on bank 1. This is not a one thing fixes all deal. It is set because the bank 1 O2 sensor is reading to much O2 in the exhaust stream of bank 1. You could have a vacuum leak...could be around intake or on throttle body. Check around for this. Look for a broken vacuum line...these are plastic and can crack. Could be clogged fuel injector...run some seafoam through it...or better yet, take it to a mech and have a fuel intection cleaning done. These are normally about 100 bucks. It will do wonders...ecspecially if you have over 100,000 on it. The system using a push pull type setup to clean the entire system. Cleans carbon off injectors, valves, tops of pistons and such. Works VERY well and will normally improve power and milage...but its not cheap. There isn't a "fuel filter" per say on those. They use a screen...it has a simple sock on the end of the pump pickup in the tank...not serviceable without a pump. Could be faulty O2...but Before you put ANY money in it...check all over for vacuum leaks...check really good...you may not be able to hear it either. Have the fuel system cleaned. New fuel is not good for our vehicles. Alot of trouble through ethanol.

Keep us posted and we'll try to help.

Got home, no gauges working, Check cc.com for help. Thanks for thehelp Scrapper.
Checked the manual for fuses that have anything to do with the cluster. There are 3. Pulled them and they were all good. Poked around under the dash for loose wires - nothing. Cranked it up just for the heck of it and low and behold , all gauges are working. must have been a loose fuse or wire somewhere.
The check engine light will have to wait till warmer weather.

I have been a GM tech. For 21 years. The lean code on that truck in cold weather is more than likely the intake manifold gaskets. They are notorious for this and have been updated with a new material to stop the problem. These trucks also have a terrible problem with instrument clusters. No fix we exchange them with rebuilt one that has to be programed to the truck. As far as the intake gaskets if you are remotely mechanical inclined you can change them with simple tools in about an hour.
There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

Thanks for the info. Hogster1. I have been known to twist a wrench on occasion. As long as its not effecting my day to day driving , it will have to wait till warmer weather.

Check with some of your local shops...it is probably a loose solder joint on the back of the gauges. My son has fixed several over the years, it takes some time he pretty much reflows and solders every joint on the back of the gauge cluster. He fixed one on a Caprice Classic not too long ago for my mother in law. He has also put stepper motors in some of them which also causes the same type of intermitten issue. Son is GM, Chrysler and International certified....and good on electronics...before he got on at a dealership he and a couple of other guys figured out how to fix the bad gauge clusters, saved some people some big money. If you were closer I could recommend a couple of shops that know how to fix the gauge clusters.
