    Default Spider rigging.

Greetings....In your humble professional opinion-can you spider rig got crappie at night using only the amount of lighting needed to safely operate a boat? Crappies are regarded as low-light feeders. What lure colors would you recommend?

I have thought about that many times since I like to night fish. I made 2 light holders out of 1 inch PVC pipe with about 3 threaded hooks down the pipe to hold my green light cord and 1 on the end so the light sets a ways from the boat when I night fish. I just put them in a rod holder. Really to catch them at night, you need the light to attract baitfish. I think once you got the baitfish coming to the light, they would stay with it and the crappie would to. Don't think I would cover a large area but stay in a tighter spot unlike normal spider rigging. You have to see your rod tips and the drop light would help. If I tried this, I would use jigs tipped with shiners. No telling what you may catch doing this. I would just put my PVC pipe with the drop light in the middle rod holder on the spider rig and poles in the rest.

I spider rig at night all summer with good success, I fish from a 24ft pontoon with 2 led lights on the front and 1 on each side and they are bright. Once the bait fish come in if you troll really slow they will follow the light, we catch lots of fish this way.
