imajigger2- You are not the only one who shares some of those views. And I 100% agree with you on the list of competition for walleye tourism. KS is not, and will not be a destination for serious walleye anglers. I live here and I go to SD and Nebraska for better walleye fishing, and I think we have some decent fishing as it is.

I disagree that the tournament guys are behind this. I can say with certainty that the tournament board was not really pleased with the NTC coming to Milford last year.

I can understand that there exists a need to harvest the eggs of mature female walleye in order to run the stocking program. Because of that you have to protect the fish until at least some of them reach sexual maturity. However the massive change from 5 fish at 18" to 2 fish at 21" is not fair to the average angler who just wants to catch dinner. That is why I see a 1-over X" slot limit being a fair compromise. KDWP gets to protect the fish needed to harvest eggs and run the hatchery, average angler gets to keep a few for the table and the fishery can be enjoyed by all.

In my opinion what’s not as much fun as one might think is driving up to Lake Francis Case in SD fishing all weekend and catching 200+ walleye of which 95% are 10 – 15” long and your biggest of the weekend was 18.5”. Knowing every time you hook a fish it’s probably going to be around 14” long. What is exciting to me is driving 2hrs to El Dorado Lake fishing all weekend and my Dad and I catching 15 walleye all over 18”. The 4 biggest being 27”, 25”, 24”, 22”. Knowing every time you hook a fish it’s probably going to be a big one and it could very well be that elusive 30” plus that I dream about. I catch and clean enough crappie to satisfy my fish needs for the year, so I throw all my Walleye back but a 27”, 25”, 24”, 22” Walleye would of gave me quite a lot of meat if I chose to clean them. When my Dad or I catch a small Walleye we refer to it as we caught a South Dakota Walleye. From what I hear SD has a lot of big Walleye but for the last 4 years they seemed to have eluded my hook. I believe the Walleye initiative is a good thing and I hope the 21” minimum, 2 creel max limits stays at El Dorado Lake.

Craig, thanks for your (and the other KS biologists') hard work, research and explainations to all these questions. I love the fact that there are several trophy lakes in KS and there are also 'meat' lakes that you can go to that are close as well. In Wichita, I'm 2 hours away from good 15" 5 fish limits at several lakes (Wilson, Kanopolis, etc) while being within an hour of catching a trophy at Eldo or Cheney. Keep up the good work and keep your shoulders broad dealing with guys that want to catch 100 15" eaters and 100 trophies in the same lake on the same day.
