Craig: Thanks for all your time and information to Kansas Crappie. I noticed Melvern wasn't listed in the crappie forecast but was listed in other species. Was this an oversight or did Melvern not get sampled for crappie this year?

There has been great interest in the El Dorado District Fisheries newsletter pilot program, and it has been deemed a success! Thanks to the interest of anglers the pilot program has been expanded statewide. You can now subscribe to fisheries district newsletters that you may be interested in. Go to the newsletter sign up page to subscribe to other fisheries newsletters. More districts will be coming online soon so keep checking back for updates.
Sign up early as newsletters are sent out to subscribers as soon as the newsletters are released and again a couple weeks after the initial release. Subscribers that sign up between newsletters may have to wait for the next issue to be released before they receive a copy.
The fourth issue of the El Dorado District Fisheries News will be sent out this week so get on the list!
DanH,
You are correct. Melvern was not listed for crappie in the 2010 fishing forecast. The lake was sampled in 2009.
The crappie population at Melvern remains similar to the last couple of years. The biologist rating for Melvern crappie in 2010 is Good to Excellent.
Hi Craig,
I also didn't see Alma City Lake anywhere on the forecast, but I know from experience that it holds some nice walleye, largemouth, smallmouth, and good numbers of black crappie. Did it not get sampled, or is KDWP just trying to keep my "secret" honeyhole a secret?;)
Fish Taxi,
Alma City Lake is sampled every other year and was not sampled in 2009 which is why it wasn't included in the 2010 Fishing Forecast. We have enough water bodies in the state that the fish biologists cannot sample every lake every year so there are some that fall in to the same category as Alma City Lake.
Craig................can you get me the name and email address of the Clinton State Park / Maintenance Manager and Grounds Supervisor. I have several questions about facilities at Clinton and I'm thinking that department manager would be the direction to go. Thanks for all your assistence to this board.
Hi Craig. I was wandering if you could explain the shad kill that happens, and what happens. I ve heard about it for years. Yesterday, I was fishing a creek at hillsdale and seeing alot of action on the top of the water. Come to find out most of what I were seeing were shad, and they apeared to be on there last leg. One swam right to the bank where I was standing then kind of layed on its side. Just curious as to what happens, and how it happens. Thanks for all you do.
Snagged.
Snaggedagain,
Gizzard shad are very susceptible to winterkill brought on by harsh winter weather like we've had this year. Extended ice cover and accompanying prolonged cold water temperatures are too much for the gizzard shad to endure and they succumb to this stress. This is a common occurrence in Kansas waters. Threadfin shad are less cold tolerant than gizzard shad which is why we don't have threadfins in our Kansas reservoirs. When our neighbors to the south get bad winters, their threadfin shad populations will also winterkill.
Catfish anglers look for concentrations of winterkilled shad just after ice out as the catfish bite can be FANTASTIC as cats feed heavily on these dead shad.
i would think a big ole eye would pick up a dead gizzard off one of those windy points
