Hey Nimrod:
I am OLD - turn 50 next March! I had to prepare for "THE TREK" for a long time - worked out at the Y this summer - dropped 20-pounds - and I've been walking with 5-pound hand-weights and riding bicycle around my neighborhood, which has some pretty good hills. The Trekking Poles really help a lot. They take a lot of stress off the legs. Next time I go I want to plan on camping or staying in a cabin in the canyon instead of trying to hike straight through.
I have never been there. Those are probably the best pictures I have ever seen of the Canyon though. The shot looking back to where you have been made my chest hurt. I can imagine the steam that would come of of my body hiking in that 15 degrees.
Don
Very nice Jerry, I would like to go there someday.
Jerry this is a great post. I wish I could sign on and post more but due to computer restrictions I cant.
Can you post some info on the trail. I would love to do something like that with my kid in a few years. I would like to spend a few nights down in the canyon if thats possible.
I flew over it in a helocopter years ago and the first time I saw the canyon was when the pilot skimmed over the south rim and we went from 40 to 7000 feet in an instant.
Man I couldnt breath I was so amazed. To go back with my kid and spend some time in that wilderness would be a trip of a lifetime. I know you and your sisters will remeber it forever.
Awesome post and beautiful pictures! I would love to do something like that someday! Thanks for the pictures!:)
Hey Dale:
The FAA doesn't allow flights below the rim anymore except for life threatening emergencies.
There are several trails in Grand Canyon National Park. We hiked down the South Kaibab trail and up the North Kaibab trail. There is camping at Cottonwood and cabins and bunkhouses at Phantom Ranch. You have to make reservations as much as a year in advance to get lodging and you want to plan your trip when the weather is good. It gets way over 100-degrees in the bottom of the canyon during the summer and the winters are very severe on the top, especially on the North Rim. You can get a lot of information on the Internet including the Grand Canyon National Park website - Grand Canyon National Park (U.S. National Park Service).
I think I'd like to take a float trip through the Grand Canyon someday.
