For me there is a world of difference between fishing for bass or crappie. For me bass fishing was for money. Did just that for many years. Serious business and no fooling around. Fishing for crappie is for fun. I do not take crappie fishing as serious as I took bass fishing.

Most the posts her are very similar to my reasons. As a young fella (back in the stone age) my grandfather and uncles would spend a lot of time catching crappie. (Douglas lake area). There was always fish for supper and the almost weekly fish fry. Unfortunately my grandfather passed before he could impart his always successful technique for catching crappie. His weather face and hands showed his experience with the weather of all seasons. I wasted several years doing the "I gotta work all the time" thing but now I am trying to get back to a more peaceful and productive life of fishing and keeping my wonderful wife and partner happy. Crappie pose a challenge for me and I enjoy that. I enjoy catching whatever decides to let me say hi. Sorry for the long post but sometimes I get to going on.

Don’t get me wrong, that was a good while ago. I thought I was a very good bass fisherman in VA and NC but the move to Arkansas and big bad beaver was skunking me and I now have little to no interest in the green fish after turning into a spec-o-holic!

Lots of ex Green Carp fishermen have changed gears and target Crappie now . Sadly they are trying to make Crappie fishing like Bass fishing . Turning it from relaxing and feeding familes to a money game .

Fishing related sales are big money. Going to cash in where they can. Fishing tournaments have winnings. Easy to sale people the gear the winners were using. They have catfish tournaments also. Virtual kayak tournaments paying out for the largest of species caught in a time period. I enjoy fishing. I don't want to turn it into a job

I got a few reasons. They taste good is number one, but a close second is the challenge. Although Im not opposed to eating White bass or even a small Spot either.

The challenge is getting greater. The scopers are going straight to the fish, the guess work of locating them with side or sonar is pretty much over unless you're hitting new water. Targeting the larger fish has totally changed. You just go right to them and then 10 other fisherman do the same within a weekend, thats the problem. Now the fish are headed south either on the bottom or deep in a pile or on bottom at bases of trees where you cant always see them. More and more fish are taking to the bottom from the pressure. I hit the hot lakes around here and the easy pickings are all but gone. Now you have bounce a jig off the bottom and you see one suddenly jump straight off the bottom and you get bit or they get spooked. With everyone literally targeting the choice fish, they're getting smarter and more skiddish and they will hide from the pressure and solely start feeding at night if pestered enough during the day. Im as quiet as I can be solo fishing on cloudy days and I still see them turn from me at 20+ feet. Dont throw away your trolling or spider rig setups just yet, it may be very useful in the days to come.
