Bady windy yesterday

Is it windier than it used to be ? I remember in dog days of summer the wind would not be a problem most of the time . Yesterday the wind was awful and fishing was super tough . Kept a mixed bag and released several . Caught a big Gar , several Channel Cats and Bass along with the Crappie . Few big Crappiue but biggest almost 16'' . Tough to livescope in the wind out in the open for sure . Same Huckabee rods and same tube jigs . Have a big pile of fillets to share with neighbors even if some were not Crappie .

Yes sir the wind was tough Sunday. Fought it for a few hours but the wind usually wins the day. Gave up and quit with 20 keepers.

Did not bring that one in but they are not bad . I clean one ever once in awhile . Just take backstrps (fillets ) and fry strips like any other fish . Gar can be fun to catch . You can put a bait on their nose with livescope . Thinking of making some of the Gar lures some people make . A big one will pull hard and sonmetimes even jump .

I took a bag of fish ,Crappie and Bass to a neighbor , one to fire station across the road and fried the Catfish for our lunch today. I like to change up alot . I love Buffalo ribs from time to time too . Only fish I will never eat again is Grinnel .

I’ll try most anything once but I draw the line at grinnel gar and buffalo. Back in the day (up to about 1995) there was a place in pine bluff called Cooks fish market- junior cook I believe was the guy’s name. They sold rough fish like crazy and had a bunch of pet deer in the back and thus it was a must stop kind of place.

Yes their son Bubba Cook fished around here for years mainly gill netting Buffalo . He passed away a couple years ago with Lung Cancer . He was a tough wirey little guy running nets in all kinds of weather .

in south Texas "garballs " used to be popular , a fish cake looking thing made out of gar and then deep fried ,heard tell they were really tasty .

I do like Nimrod does when it comes to gar. I use tin snips to make a cut along the back so I can remove the two backstraps similar to a deer. Cut up into bite size pieces and fry along with the rest of the fish. A good tip is if you keep a gar from hot muddy water expect it to taste like hot muddy water. Catch one out of a clear cold body of water and it is way better in my opinion.

I agree most fish should not have fishy or off taste unless they come from bad water . If water is staganet ,muddy or full of algea fish could have a nasty taste .
