Good story. That is a well known spot. Many a limit has been taken from that ditch. In high school, we caught a lot of limits from that ditch (about a decade later than your story). Most crappie you see in there is a little on the small side but people still take them home.Got a Story that goes back a ways... 1987 to be exact.
This was at Lake Conway again. I was a 20 something young Buck just getting into this Crappie Fishing thing. Lake Conway back then was amazing not only for the Crappie, but the Bluegill were everywhere, let alone the legendary 2lb Red Ear. They were numerous and very large. But this remembrance is of a Crazy Crappie trip in the first week of April that Spring of 1987. I was with my Lake Conway expert at the time Ole Ed-Mo. His Real name was Jim... This dude loved Fishing way more than me, but I was learning. He had a 6th sense about him....he just knew how and where to find em. We were the Cane Pole toten Dudes using Minnows and carrying all our stuff in a 5 gallon bucket each. We must have looked hilarious. Well this particular Spring day had threats of thunderstorms and it was some kind of humid. We stopped off at the Old Bates tackle store to pick up bait. It was in a white cinder block bldg across the street from the Present location. Rick and a short stubby dude that tied Dana-Max jigs were there. They said the Dam was doing good on Crappie. So Ed-Mo and me swung on down to the dam first, and later going to Adams Lake Landing to rent that 5 dollar flatbottom. Anyway... got to the Dam to see the water raging through the Locks. A couple Dudes where fish from the top of Dam down into eddies. They would pull one up every few minutes. But those few spots seemed to be the only reasonable spots. Everywhere else the Current was crazy. Hang up city... Jim in his knowledge noticed that the gate that controlled a very large Pipe was turned open. This Pipe ran down Palarm Creek and into what appears to be the wooded bank. Jim said lets go across the top of dam and find where it dumps. So we trucked on across and followed a path along side a big field. A couple hundred yards later we came upon a 6 foot wide ditch with that Pipe pumping right into it. This ditch feed into Grassy Lake. The current was moving pretty good. We both stood there and looked at each other and thought we should try this. The pipe opening was right at our feet. So Ed-Mo had his ready to dip and I stopped him and said "wait for ME"!! So he hesitated and waited. We then both dipped a minnow at the same exact time on a cane pole and cork to watch both corks slam down at the same time !!! We both pulled up Slabs !! And let me tell you it was ON !!! As fast as you put that minnow in there instant fish !! We both caught a Limit in about 27 minutes... The Crappie were Ganged up at that Pipe going crazy. We walked back across that Dam with buckets full. People at the Dam had eye balls popping out !! They could believe how quick and fast that happened. We didn't tell them where we caught them. We came back the next day and they were gone....no Crappie. We tried many more times through the years when that Pipe gate was open....but we NEVER caught a fish there again. We talked about that PIPE for years... It was my first Big Stringer of Crappie. I've been hooked ever since. So the Creepers will be all over this place now...GOOD! Get em away from the Creek and Pond. LOL !!
