Many years ago, there was a great crappie run at a local lake. No size or possession limits back then. We used a locally made plastic bait and usually caught all we wanted to mess with. Color was chartreuse 75% of the time, occasionally yellow and rarely white. Several times these artificials outfished minnows. One time I remember my dad and I were catching a fish every cast and had a boat full of minnow fishermen pull up right on top of our spot. Dad was bouncing his jig off their boat and catching fish out from under them. I don't remember their minnows catching a thing. I always think about that when the bite is slow and I consider minnows.

We were at Washington at the first camp down there and minner fished. We caught a few, but when we pulled out an old man and woman in their 80's pulled up to the ramp and asked me if I wanted some fish that they had more than they wanted to clean. Not minding to clean fish and not having but a dozen or so, I said yes, and while I parked my truck, the man went and got 12 nice slabs which he brought to me in a 5 gallon bucket. He said I brought you my 12 smallest ones. Apparently my eyes musta bugged out a little cause he said you wanna see my cooler, and of course I said yes. His cooler was one of those white "deer camp" coolers and when he raised the top, it was nearly full of the biggest slabs I had ever seen. I asked him how he fished and he said, I straight jig fish, except when it's really slow, then I will tip with a nibble. He said on that day, he was way too busy to mess with nibbles.
I don't understand the color thing, but I have almost every color and style you could imagine, but most of the time use the same old jigs that have produced in the past.
