Yes we did run over you at Washington, and it was one of the more embarrassing things that has happened to us on the lake. It is worth more than a mention and we still owe a debt to you. We were just practicing what we would actually do if we saw you on a good bite, unfortunately we got "too" close before we realized it was not a bump and run tournament.

As far as fishing, I've seen your fish. I've seen where ya'll finish in tournaments. I would be tickled to fish with you any day, any style, at any lake.

Tommy if it is important enough color to tie on your pole then it is important enough to give it a chance to work for you. Give the bait a good hour or so to catch fish for you. Always try bright colors and darker colors and remember Chartreuse is a base color throughout the crappie world. So start fishing colors with some sort of Chartreuse in them to give you confidence. As soon as possible and when possible always use two jig poles when jig fishing or several different baits when spider rigging too allow you to see which color is working best. Jig head colors and size of jig heads can also be important when dialing in fish. When thinking about jig heads always remember jig head sizes are comparable to how much wind there is, how deep the water is, and cover, the more wind and deeper may mean your need for a bigger head, and a bigger head can be released from heavy deeper water cover snags, & shallower and clearer usually means a smaller head, also time of year like now in winter fish may want a smaller offering but are deep so try placing a round split shot above or increasing your spider rig weight with a small jig head and jig to get your bait down to finicky fish which are deep, but want a smaller offering. Remember spring usually means bigger jig heads and jigs. The Bobby Garland SlabSlayer 3 inch (I always split the tail right down the middle with an exact o knife) is the king of Big fish killers in the spring. I would also encourage you to try scents like the crappie nibble or tipping your jig with a minnow, which can sometimes make all the difference between a good bite or poor bite. I hope that what ever you do, you try new things where ever you fish. because all lakes are not created equal and most require different techniques to consistently catch fish. Good Luck Tommy

FWIW, I haven't used minnows in about forty years.

I fish 2 or 3 times a week and I may give minnows a shot about once a year. After an hour of minnows I put the jigs on and start putting fish in the boat, and the minnows go home to the cat.

My electronics do the hard work, finding the fish. Yesterday while I was launching my boat, a feller, waiting to launch his boat, asked me why I had 2 fish-finders. He claimed that his fish-finders never did much for him, and all he used it for was to see the depth of the water. Also, he said that jigs never worked good for him, so he fishes only minnows.

I left the ramp using my trolling motor and never run the outboard all day. By the time he got his boat underway I had boated 5 crappie that I had spotted with my electronics. I have a few standard "go-to" jigs and rarely does one do better than the others.

We had had a lot of big swings in the weather over the last week and the fish were few and far between, and no real pattern to where they showed up. When one spot got slow, I put the trolling motor on 10 and got a marker buoy in my hand and ran till I found fish. This was repeated when necessary.

Coincidentally. the other guy came back to the ramp just as I was getting my boat ready for the road. He checked my catch (limit catch) and told me that he had run over 16 miles and only caught 2 throwbacks. - - - - - - - - What can I say?

I never caught a fish while running 40 mph, and it will knock your minnow off the hook, every time.

Don't get me wrong, I know fishermen that swear by minnows, I did once too; but, now, they are just a nuisance, and a thing of the past. I've fished most of my 76 years, and I am still learning, but it's getting so damn hard to remember nowadays. I hope that I don't forget where I put my jigs, and I have already forgot where I can get minnows.
