Only true 3 lb'er I've personally handled was over 17"
But in the lakes where they get big, the thickness and girth
go wild. Probably 4 lb'ers shorter than the 3 I had in some lakes.

4lbers will go 18-20in and the circumference will usually equal the length and thickness will run 3 1/2 in to 4in thick.

the reason i ask this question. i seen a post Kern River Valley Bulletin Board • View topic - Fish On!!!! 05-11-09
i fish this lake quite a bit & have never seen a crappir over 1.5
thank you guys for the info
Depending on thickness mostly it can be from about 17" to 19", but know the same length crappie can be closer to 4 pounds. So it is all relative. This has not been a good year in my part of Toledo Bend as I have not caught at least one 17", but I have caught a bunch 14"-16". Almost every spring I get some really nice crappie long line trolling around Hydrilla. All the fish love that stuff as it makes for high oxygen levels and a place to hid/get out of the sun, what ever they do in the grass. We lost almost all of our Hydrilla about 4 years back and the fishing has not been the same since, but it is coming back so I am really looking forward to next spring.
It helps to live in the South as the growing season is a lot longer so I don't know where you live since you don't have that in your info, but that is a big key.

I saw a replica mount of the NY state record at the state fair last year (3lb, 12 oz) and it looked like a serving platter. Probably 18" long, 10" deep and 3" across the "shoulders".
Worst part is, it came from a little lake 15 minutes from my house, and I have never caught a crappie over 10" there
Here's a 3lb 2oz white crappie i caught at ky lake a few years ago. It was 17 1/4" long. Should have put it on the wall.
Oh, I'd say about like this un here.
Note that this fish is only a little over 16". Caught him on a Dorito. I think the junk food habit is what got her so fat and was her undoing in the end.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.
I went and looked at that website. Hard to say much about the fish
just layed out on the table or whatever.
But if that one he's holding up is one of the 3 pounders, dude must
be able to palm beachballs :p
