Not sure but I caught it today on 4lb test line, minnow and bobber. UGH.

It was fun catching him. Now I'm really curious. He had hard gill plates, sunken eyes, and a mouth FULL of teeth. Any one know?

Grinnel is another name for them does the dorsal fin run all the way down it's back?

I don't know what they are called. I have caught hundreds of them. African American people , I have heard , call them cypress trout. Where they get that name from I have no idea.

They are a tough fish, I have thrown them on the bank and let then lay for a couple of hours and kick them in the water and they swim off.Also, they say they are good to eat.

Pretty sure it's a bow-fin or grinnel as we call them down here. Haven't caught one in a few years but they always go back in!

That's a grinnel for sure. They fight about as much as anything you can catch. Caught one on 8lb line this spring and he was longer than my 50qt icechest. Weighed about 10-14 lbs and took nearly 10 minutes to get in. Called grinnel, cypress bass, or bow-fin down here. They say the meat is real cottonie, but I don't know for sure. Also say it's like a gaspor-gou and you have to eat it hot right out of the pan. I don't know. I enjoy catching them on jig poles when the crappie slow down, but I throw them all back.
