    Cool overpopulated

I have a buddy who just bougth a place w/a 9 acre lake.Southern Illinois full of huge bass...the problem is that the place is so overpopulated with palm size crappies that you cant get a sanwich out of 3 of'm.
Literally 3 white rockets and you get 3 tiny crappie every cast.Is it possible to fish them down to the point of generating some healthy fish or do crappie do the small gene thing like gills??

Welcome to the site from Indiana

Question, is he going to let other boats on the lake, reason
asking if he is fishing by himself he will never be able to keep up with the new fish hatching.

Second question that he needs a preditor fish such as bass, pike
to help hold down the population.

What a wonderful problem to have

I know someone with a 20 acre pond, it's 60 feet deep in spots, then shallow enough in other places to wade completely across. It has some big bass, nice bluegills, warmouths, catfish, BUT it's also full of crappie anywhere from 6 to 8 inches long. I don't think I ever saw one over 9". I always heard not to even attempt to stock a pond unless you use hybrid or black crappie. This body of water is almost big enough to call a lake. Didn't someone in another post mention it's not a good idea to stock crappie in any body of water less than 100 acres?

I'd also talk with a fisheries biologist who is will to help you with the pond. From what I have read, it's not as much genetics as it is their environment and population stunting their growth. Maybe you can work with the biologist and trap many of them and use them for brood stock for other lakes.

The DNR here in Kentucky recommends you not put crappie in a farm pond for this very reason.
