Default Tips for fishing at night with lights?

I'm thinking about getting one of those flourescent or LED light tubes to drop down under the boat and try my hand at a bit of night fishing.

I guess the light is supposed to attract food for the baitfish, which attracts the bigger fish.

How deep do y'all set your lights?
And do you jig straight down into the circle of light, or do you fish the edges of the light?
Lastly, do you use any different bait or jigs for this type of fishing (or for night-fishing in general?)

    Thanks for any pointers guys,
    Ralph

I use a 24'' green light and set it up to where the top is just under the water. I tight line small minnows around the outside edge of the light. Watch your depth finder and see how deep the bait is that comes to your light and fish about a foot under the bait ball.
    Good luck!!!

P.S. It takes about an hour to pull shad into the light.

I agree with stump hunter! I use the solid green lights just beneath the water surface crappie feed looking up so to me it makes sence to me to try to get them to the top sometimes the bait will be right at the top & other times they,ll be deep, i,ve caught fish in both the shadows & right under the lights, i do like the stick lights like stump hunter because they shine out as well down in the water. hope this helps.

I use Crappi Candles. These attach to your line above the bait and attracts fish right to your bait.

White or Green lights are your best option for freshwater fishing.

I think white light works the best, however it also draws in the bugs the best too. Then again the bugs draws in the bait fish, which draw in the Crappie. The green light does the same thing, except the bugs.

Once you have drawn in the bait fish--Can you use the TM? And will the bait fish stay with you as you work the water? I would rather hunt them than wait for the crappie to come to me.
