    Default Jig Heads

I'm pretty fussy about the kinds of jig heads I use. Having trouble finding exactly what I like. Mizmo has 1/16 & 1/32 oz heads with a number 2 hook, I like them (especially the larger hook), but their web site is down.

Where do you fellas get your jig heads and what are your favorites?

How many of you feel the color of the jig head makes a difference or do the plain lead heads do just as good?

Any thoughts about weedless heads - which are best and where do you get them? Do you loose some fish because of them?

I just keep it simple. I go to Walmart and buy the weedless ball jigs in 1/16 and 1/8 oz varieties. I also have a few 1/32s. With these jigs I can penetrate the brush tops with the rarest of hang-ups.

My dad and I pour our own weedless heads. I like the ones with the fiber weedguard versus the wire one. I was concerned about losing or missing fish when I first started, but haven't found either to be an issue. Just trim the guard back to the hook tip. One way to look at it: If you don't have the weedless jighead, think of all the fish you could never present a bait to without hanging up. Just those extra fish outnumber the occasional miss you may have.

I pour all my own jig heads and powder paint them. Have never used a weedless panfish jig only use them with bass jigs.

Monks crappie.com Is the best that I have found, 1/32 and 1/16 oz.
Both have #2 hook. If you order from Monk you will get your order
    in about two days.

I'll bump this... the guy is awesome, does great work and fast delivery. I ordered 400 1/32 and 1/24 jigs with #1 red sickle... painted them and can't wait to use them.

    Wink Pastor ...

    Check here for Grousefly's work : Fishing Gear & Baits | Jigs | P & S CUSTOM TACKLE | Crappie.com Business Directory
Click on the "Images" link (right hand side of page) ... then click on pics for a closer look.

You might also want to read thru this thread, taking note of my reply to "Mikey" : Weedless jig heads - Crappie.com

He can make 1/32 & 1/16oz jigheads with #2 hooks ... gold, bronze, red ... weedless or not - painted or not.

    As to your questions :

I get all of my weedless jigheads from Grousefly (Paul Mullins, Vicco Ky)
I've used unpainted jigheads for nearly 20yrs, with great results.
I almost always use weedless jigheads !!
I don't think I lose or miss fish, due to the weedguard. As Speckwick stated ... you get to present a weedless jighead to alot more fish, in alot of places where you wouldn't want to put a open hook jig. And you can expect to get the jig back, more often than not, when fishing the heavier cover. You can, and will, get a weedless jig hung up ... but, try my "bowing to the jig" method (as explained in the "Mikey" reply post), and you'll lose alot less

I mostly swim my jigs (cast/slow retrieve), but even on those occasions where I might vertical jig them, or Vertical Cast them, I still feel like I can do better with a weedless jighead ... especially when fishing around wood.
