Default How do I figure out the year/model of this Evinrude motor?

I have recently acquired an 9.9 hp Evinrude with a boat I purchased. The guy said it was a mid-'70s model. The problem is the ID plate has a big gouge in the model #. The Serial Number is clear. I'm having trouble getting it to start, and I'm afraid I'm going to need parts. Problem is, I don't know what model it is. Any way I can get the Model number using my Serial number? Any help would be appreciated!

Does any of this help? If not you will have to call the dealer with the serial no. Looks like the 3rd digit is the year.

Also look on top of the motor for a round welsh plug. It may be stamped in it.

This sounds like what I might have to do. Only problem is I have no idea what a "welsh plug" is, or where to find it. Any ideas?

you could also look at the diagrams on this website (link below) and try to match it up by appearance compared to yours, the section on "motor covers" is where i'd start.good luck. may take a while but if your numbers are gone it may be your best shot.

Thanks guys. Took me forever to find the plug, but I found it. No numbers on it! But thanks to the list LUVJIGN posted, I've been able to take the numbers I can make out between the scratches and use them to narrow it down to 10 possible matches. Unfortunately, each of those 10 possibilities are from 10 different years ('80-89). And from the look of the motor, I doubt it's any newer than an '85, so I think I'm looking at an '80-'84. And since the guy told me he thought it was a '74, I'm wondering if it might be an '84? I have the SERIAL #, so if I could just find some way to use that to determine the model # I would be in good shape. Guess I'll have to call a dealer after all.

On the old evinrude's I had if I remember right the serial # was made up of at least 3 things, year, Hp, & a serial number meaning motor 1 or 1001 etc. post a pict of motor I bet there's folks here that had same one.
