    Default Bait shad around weldon???

Where can we cast net some shad around weldon to use for striper fishing? Someone told me you could catch them at the dam but not sure about access up there. We're planning to go tomorrow and wanted to save some money on bait. Can anyone help?

Heard they were catching shad below the dams. Just look at some maps and put in at the closest ramp and head upriver. BE CAREFUL, lots of junk in the river below the dams.

We used to catch them by throw net at night by the dam on the Roanoke Rapids lake. They would come up to the lights that are across the dam. You just need a good livewell to keep the fish alive all night. There's a good parking lot and boat launch, but can't remember the directions over there.

You can turn at the "Thelma" sign on 158 west of Roanoke Rapids. Follow the signs to the boat ramp. Definitely catch your bait here during the night or early morning. Use a heavy, large net to catch the deep bait below the dam. Good luck!

well it worked out...kinda. It took about 50 casts to get 3 dozen baits. Nets were too small and light. We had a few dozen bass minnows and bought a few more dozen shad and fished everything up by 2:30. Lots of fish to be caught and a lot of fishermen to catch them. It was a nice day to be fishing. No real big ones but over all it seems like the fish were bigger than last year on average.
