    Default Most ridiculous lure?

what's the most ridiculous thing you ever saw a crappie caught on?
Many years ago, had a man in the boat with my Dad and I, he was even
less a fisherman than Dad - he asked me for a lure to "get to the bottom
of this here lake" so I tied him on a 7/8 oz "magnum hellbender" remember
those? Folks used to troll them for stripes. Anyway, he pitched it out, and
said "this ain't no good, it floats!" So then I tie him on one of those huge
double-bladed buzz baits, HUGE. He starts slow rolling it in, and pulls in
about a 1 1/2 lb crappie. If I only knew then what I do now - we could have
probably loaded the boat right there with the right approach, but didn't have
a clue - all I studied as a kid was bass fishing. I guess it is true, at the right
time during the Spring, they will hit a baloney sandwich if you hold it too
    close to the water...

    Arrow You know JW ...

I used to think spinnerbaits and crankbaits were "weird" baits to catch Crappie on :D .... but I don't now ! Have caught or seen caught, too many big Crappie on them, to doubt them any more. But, my own personal "ridiculous" lure, that has caught a Crappie .... would be a 4" Gene Larew Salt Craw - texas rigged - fishing a deep, rocky bank - just at dark. It was a big 'ol Male Crappie, all decked out in his finest black sporting coat :p He probably would have weighed around about 1.5lbs. I was, of course, Bass fishing. And I don't think he was any more surprised, than I was .... LOL!! .......... cp

Before this Jan. the only crappie I ever caught came 3-4 years ago on a 1/4 ounce spinner bait. My friend told me to weigh it because he thought it was a big crappie (I didn't know that the fish was a crappie much less a large one.) and it was just shy of 2 lbs. I threw it back and kept on fishing, for green carp of course.

I wonder how many big crappie have had their lips ripped out by bass
fishermen? Some of those missed strikes may not have been what you
thought - or were after! After I have crappie fished for so long, it has
ruined me for bass fishing, that old hair trigger, cross their eyes reflex
is just gone now. Can't believe how tough the big ones mouths are -
fought one for 10 minutes back several years ago, only to have it roll
up on its side by the boat, open mouth, (yawn?) and spit the bait back
at me. Sharp hooks, thumbing the spool, rod bent double, and not even
close. It looked like a spot too, if it was, the biggest I've ever seen.
Don't it just kill you, when you pull 'em up from deep water, and they come
unhooked, they lay there for like 5 minutes, and the net handle is always
6" too short to reach 'em - bout fell in awhile back leaning after a big slab.
And the wind is of course always blowing you further away...
