Question where are the crappies right now?

hello everyone, I am new here and am planning on going out today. I live in northern WI and we have half ice half open water. It is supposed to be upper 60's today and sunny. Could anydody tell me where they think the fish might be right now? Deep?, suspened?, shallow? Thanks

I hope you've got a fish-finder... you're probably gonna have to search for them. My experience with "ice-out" crappie, is that they are scattered, and not even in "pre-spawn mode yet.

Once the water temp starts creeping into the upper 40's, they'll probably start schooling up in deeper water adjacent to spawning areas.

If you can find any submerged wood, I'd suggest dipping some jigs around it, trying different depths (work from the bottom-up) until you hopefully find how deep they are.

Ice-out crappie can be very challenging. I wish you luck, my friend.

If you can find an area of shallow water that catches the mid day and afternoon sun near a chanel you might locate them hanging near in the wood cover or big rocks.
