    Any other diesel nuts on here? I'm in the Dodge camp, after being
    born and raised GM :o but like all of 'em, what ya'll got?
    Stories, "bombing" talk, etc. Don't turn me in to the FBI, at least not
    for that comment, that is the common slang for hopping up diesels. :p

    i dont like diesel it smells bad and that nois it makes . i like a quiet running vehickle no loud pipes . never have . guess i am a old fogey . but never have . some of the new gass burners have a awful oder to the exzoust .. that is my nickle `s worth.

    Hi Papasage, I hear you, it is not everyone's taste. An aquired taste
    maybe? My Dad ruined me , been driving diesel this or that long as I've
    been driving. I like the smell of raw diesel, and exhaust if its rich and in
    small whiffs - my High Output Cummins will burn your eyes though, hooking
    up the boat trailer if the wind is outta the wrong way. As for the sound,
    what can I say - if I could afford to, I'd sleep in it with the motor running -
    one guys noise is another guys lullabye. Don't hurt my feelings either for
    a dually to hit 20 mpg, even if I do have to float a note to fill up now.
    And pull.... :D It don't know the meaning of "can't"

    I know I really like my `03 Dodge ram, it has the Cummins high output. There is nothing that I wanted to pull it couldn’t, and get 20 to 21 mpg average. Mines still completely stock and I have no desire to change it. Papasage have you really listen to the newer Cummins (I think `03 and newer), when sitting idling there’s no more noise than most gas burners and all you hear when driving is a little turbo whistle. Mine is a 3500 quad cab, short bed, with single rear wheels.

    yep i heard them ther a few come by my shop that pulls cargo traylors .

    i amnot saying i wouldnt have one if i needed a work horse . they are quiet on the road but that idling of most of them is loud . and it irritates me . i would git use to it if i was pulling something like a camper traylor or something where i needed that power . then that is the way to go

    on the '03 and newer, unless you are just in the habit of looking at
    badges on vehicles, most folks won't peg it as a diesel at first, they are
    so quiet. Dad gum though, I took off my muffler and put a big heavy
    equipment air filter on it within the first year - mines an '02 and
    clatters pretty loud, the loudest of the early ones, I am told. Something
    to do with injection timing and cylinder pressure. I love the deep bellow
    out the pipe when its in a hard pull, nothing at all like glass packs on a
    gasser. The turbo whistle can get a bit much towing heavy in hills, but
    it lets my EGT's run cooler, the main purpose of both my mods. Cooler =
    longer life. If you roll the windows up and turn on the radio though, you
    can't really hear it in the cab. Of course I run with windows down and radio
    OFF most of the time :D I do get a little embarassed in a campground at
    5:30 AM if I have to crank up though, thats why I usually use the wifes
    ride to back the boat in when we're camping. This is just my personal
    feelings, but far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't care if they didn't make a pick-up less than a 3/4 ton. They (suspension, brakes, driveline) are built
    the way a 1/2 ton should be, the 3500's about like what a good 2500 should
    be. Change the fluids and filters like you should, and just DRIVE...
    I average 10 years+ on a truck, and have not yet (knock on wood) had to
    do much of anything along the lines of ball joints, brakes, trans. rebuilds,
    clutches, etc. "E" range tires usually last me 75,000 plus too. The Dodge
    is probably not going to be quite as easy on stuff as my previous trucks,
    after all, she has a bit of a weight problem - 7,160 lbs. with me and my
    daughter on board and 1/4 tank of fuel...

    I drive a Ford 350 4 x 4 diesel and love it, get great mileage out of it and I pull a 28 ft fifth wheel with a 19 foot Ranger behind it and it doesn't miss a beat. Really quiet outside , it has a quad cab so it has alot of room, and it is quiet in the cab. Has all leather interior and heat in the seats for those cold mornings. I know what you mean about starting it up in the am in the campgrounds, but have you ever listened to how many there are taking off in the morning......wouldn't have anything else even with the price of fuel right now.

    bvgonefishing, Hi, did you build or buy or what the hitching arrangement
    on back of your fiver? I'm interested in getting set up similar when the
    money gets right, hopefully in this life Curious about towing behind a
    camper. I've read alot about it on the turbo diesel register web site,
    but always welcome first hand knowledge - I hear you can't back up with
    a double, not a problem, one of my friends on here will probably be intersted
    in this too, think he may end up towing a double hook up too. Have you
    had any trouble with tires on the boat trailer heating up or otherwise?
    Is it a tandem axle trailer? Figure a big Ranger, it could be.

    No the trailer isn't a tandem, only thing that we wanted and didn't get, but it does have the surge brakes which helps out alot when double pulling. The fifth wheel of course is a pin set up and the hitch on the back of the trailer is a standard reese hitch, had to beef up the back of the trailer alittle with some angle iron, but don't have any problems with it, I'm an iron worker so have access to the iron that was needed and also a welder. No you can't back up with two together, I have backed up when needed, at a gas station etc. but only a foot or two, you have no control over where the boat is going, but we just drop the boat and set up the camper and then go get the boat, most campgrounds have a big parking area where you can drop. We follow the Crappie USA circuit and also have started fishing the Crappie Masters tournies, so we have pulled alot of miles this way. Get alot of looks going down the road. Saw a tag along piggy backing a boat this morning at Mark Twain, that sure looks like it could be squirreley to me. If you want more info let me know, will get alittle more technical if I can.

    I love my 03 Dodge, 51,000 miles so far and going strong. It will pull anything you want and then some more. I dont get the mileage that stray said, but most of mine is in town, or highway pulling the boat. And part of it probably is becuase of putting bigger tires on it and that cant keep my foot out of it. The best money I ever spent was on the new exhaust and air intake, sure makes it sound like a big rig running down the road. There isnt anything better than a loud cummins and a smoking one at that. Just the kid in me, maybe someday I will go up....nah. And like some ones said about TDR it is the best site next to this one on the web.
