    Default New Texas Record

    STORY REPOST FROM AFD

    "WHOPPER of a Crappie"

Lake Ray Roberts now owns the official Texas state record for White Crappie. The previous record was held G.G. Wooderson.
He had held the record for 41 years whith a white crappie weighing in at 4lbs. 9oz. caught on Navarro Mills lake near Corsicana, TX. The new record is now held by Alec Dyer of Keller, TX with a 4lb. 9.3oz 24 3/4" long.
In a telephone interview yesterday with Mr. Dyer he proceeded to tell us a remarkable story of how he landed the whopper. He and his 4 year old son Ryan were fishing the slips at Lake Ray Roberts marina. He said the fishing had been good most of the day but had started to slow down. As a typical 4 year old would do he began to swing his mickey mouse rod and reel back and forth, up and down, and he eventually had a heck of a mess with his line. As I was working the kinks out of his line, I see the excess line that I had unspooled start to take off. I grabbed the line and gave it a big jerk, the hook was set and the fight was on. I'm now having to bring the line in by hand because of the mess my son had made with the reel. I could tell it was big but figured it was probably just a black bass. After a couple minutes of give and take on the line I had her to the top of the water. When I see its a crappie I yell for Ryan to grab the net, I scoop her up and the rest was for the record books.
The record breaking White Crappie is currently being held in a holding tank awaiting highest bidder.
