Tohatsu engines and Mercury are relatively the same.
Mercury though in the 9.9 size and higher shift in the handle...while the smaller engines are the same.
What size are you after?

Any one use them? Was looking at a site that has them for $400 cheaper than I can get a Mercury. The site says that Mercury and Nissan motors are made by Tohatsu in the smaller horsepowers. Here is the site:Tohatsu Outboard Motors | TohatsuOutboards.com Any one ever buy off this company? Like the idea of free shipping also.

Great motor. I had a 3.5hp tohatsu 2 stroke I bought from boaters world to put on the back of my wally world monark jon to fish a green carp roundup on Lake Badin with a friend. Great motor. Lil cranky when the weather is cold but got me from point A to point B. I wish i had that motor instead of my 9.9 4 stroke mercury.
Oh I could wrestle a monster fish
Marine Doctor: I'm looking at a 9.9 due to hp restrictions unless I can get a 15 with 9.9 stickers.
supposedly, mercury 9.9' s are made by tohatsu(4 stroke)but i can't swear by that. i had a 30 h.p. tohatsu(2 stoke) for 8 years and it was a trouble free motor. i know a lot of people that have them and you just can't tear them up. i can't vouch for the 4 strokes because i am not familiar with those.
I have a 4 stroke Nissan, that is from what I have heard the exact same motor with a differnt sticker on the side. I bought it new last year, and could not be happier, trouble free, runs great, uses hardly any gas, and was alot cheaper on the wallet than some of the more reconizable brands.
BUY IT!!!! cant go wrong!!!!
proud Tohatsu owner!!!!!
