Originally ... spiderrigging referred to multiple poles placed around the perimeter of the boat (like the legs of a spider) ... lines hanging straight down (more or less), with the boat moving. Tightlining referred to fishing without a float, in a stationary boat (tied or anchored). Longlining referred to trolling one or more rods, with the lines dragging well behind the boat.
Those terms have been co-mingled with each other, to distiguish subtle differences in the method known simply as "Trolling". There's more than one way to "troll", so the different terms are just a way to accurately describe "how" a person is "trolling".
