    Default Mercury trim guage problem

I have a problem with the guage not registering the placement of the trim. It is pegged to the top of the guage most of the time. When you try to adjust it will move a little, but once you let off it will peg back up. Just a few weeks ago I was moving along and looked to find the guage reading correctly, but the next time out it was back to the top. What is wrong with this thing? I have pulled the guage to check for shorting, but all wires look new. Please help

What year and size of Merc? They have used several different types over the years.

sounds like a ground wire or the gauge itself could be bad. mine done that one time it was under warranty they replced gauge.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Just got back online from being out of town. I will get the year and the model on the motor tomorrow. Where is the sending unit for the trim?

Usually on the motor near where the motor pivots. You should see some wires going to it.
