I fish them either under a weighted float or with a small split shot ahead of the jig about 18 inches. I can't cast them any other way. I use them anytime I don't get bites on the normal baits or if bluegill fishing.

    Three options:

    1) Use LIGHT line (2# mono or braid like 10/2 PP or 4# Fireline.)

    2) Fish them under a float.

    3) Cast them with a fly rod.

You can use 'em anytime. I fished them last summer in the heat -- caught bass and bream. (I was using option #1 with 4# Fireline.)

I use that size jig all year, hardly if ever go above 1/64 oz. even for crappie. For floats i use 3 kinds. 1- the small styrofoam ice fishing bobber, that has a stick to peg the line, like this when the fish are fussy and in real shallow water, you dont get much of a splash with these. 2- 3/4 '' clip on weighted styrofoam bobber, use these up to about 10' of water. And my favorite is a homemade peacock quill slip float i make, can use these either pegged or like a slip float when fishing deeper water.

I use 1/80 oz spider rig. Also will use a fixed float with bee moth.

2lb test mono (I use Stren) no float. Sometimes fish will hit these light jig/lines when I can't get a hit on anything else. Try it you may like it.

Under a float in shallow water, really deadly for me when gills and crappie are spawning. CrappiePro

If the water is clear and shallow I use 2# line and no float if a little stained use 4# and a pegged float.
