Question Fishing for YOY Black Crappie

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a website with pictures/drawings (with key id features) of young-of-the-year black crappie. Anyone know a good site? I'm doing some research on Black crappie, and I need to identify some samples of late summer yoy fish.

I've searched some sites (including this one), but haven't had any luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey CC,

Any luck yet? All the info I've seen is on larger crappie but I suspect young of the year would have the same identifying features.

Black crappie have 7-8 dorsal spines and random blotches on their sides.

White crappie have 5-6 dorsal spines and the black side markings form vertical bars rather than random spots.

When you see one of each next to each other it's real easy to tell the difference by their side markings.

This site might have what you're looking for - http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/seagrant/G...unfish.html#Pa

    Hope this helps.

    Default Try this link

Cal State at Berkeley has a detailed site the describes and illustrates all life stages of the black crappie.

Hope this helps. BTW, where are you in Canada? We used to show dogs in Ontario a lot and we always enjoyed visiting up North. - Roberta

Question Can somebody help me out here?

I have this website bookmarked and have no trouble going to it from my Favorites file, but the link I typed in isn't working. Anyone have a clue why? - Roberta

Roberta, for some strange reason, your link included a "www." at the beginning of the URL. Could be a "feature" of this message board, but yes, that link does not work. This one does.

    Thumbs up Thanks!

When I typed it without the www, it didn't come up as a live link. It maybe a function of my old browser. Dunno.

At any rate, I thought the info on the website was very informative. - Roberta

    Thumbs up Thankyou

Thanks for the berkley link, it has some great info and references...It's still tough to find good diagrams/pictures of YOY crappie, but I will keep looking.

I'm doing a study on possible predation by black crappie and bluegill on walleye in southern Ontario lakes, and I have a tonne of small sunfish/crappie samples that need to be seperated.

Thanks for all of your help and direction!
