A buddy of mine was in the process of trading boats in February, when another mutual aquaintance offered to buy his trade in for the price the dealer was offering. They made a deal, and one weekend in April, the new boater took his boat on a shakedown cruise with his brother. Both had boated before, but only as a guest on someone else's boat. They had been running around the lake, and the boat's new owner slowed down to play with the depth finder in the dash. He began griping about how it kept flashing shallow readings even though they were in the middle of the lake. He then decided to walk up to the front deck, with the boat still in gear a little above idle, to see what depth the graph showed. He got there and realized it wouldn't work because the transducer was on the trolling motor, so he turned around to go back to the driver's seat. Just as he turned around, the boat ran aground on the mid-lake hump he was seeing on the flasher, causing him sit down hard on the stowed TM. Unfortunately, stowed trolling motors don't make for very stable seating, and he tumbled backwards into the lake in spite of his best attempts to hold on to the TM shaft. Then, minus the 236lbs that had previously occupied the front deck, the boat began moving forward, with his brother sitting stunned in the passenger seat for a second. The brother quickly shut the OB down and helped the guy back in the boat. To add insult to injury, he had a pretty good three inch cut on his butt from the TM prop, and he lost his glasses. His brother can tell this story so well that it will bring tears to your eyes.
