    Default Rolled the dice!

After 3 years of weighing the pros and cons of pond stocking crappie, I made a decision. My pond is a little over 4 acres. This puts it right on the minimum size some recommend for crappie. I have established a good population of green carp that are about 2 to 3 pounds now and reproducing. Also, I had stocked initially with 3 pounds per acre of fat head minnows and left them in a year before putting any other fish in the pond. Then I stocked blue gill and channel cat. Then a year later came the bass. I did supplemental feeding for the first year until the cats started getting too fat.:o This was all done according to a fish biologist. He recommended that if I do stock crappie, only stock black crappie and only if I have a viable population of bass to help control over populating. He also said that after crappie are established to fish them pretty heavy.
Well to make a short story long, I ordered 300 black crappie today to be delivered the 21st of March. I also ordered another 6 pounds of minnows.
Once I get the crappie up to eating size, I may need help to control the population I'll be asking for volunteers. Thanks

A little info about the pond. It is 32 feet deep in the middle. I flooded a steep hollow. Also down the middle, I left all of the trees bulldozed into a nice windrow. I do have some willows growing around the edge plus structure that I placed. I think they will have plenty of hiding places.

Sounds like a great setup. Should be sufficent to support crappie. I caught some monsters out of a 2 1/2 or 3 acre pond a few years back.

I bet you will have no problem getting the pond fished enough to control population!! Sounds like a good place to have Crappie Camp - someday in the future

    Default If I have to!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speck, it really sounds like you have done your homework on this subject. I know you will probably have a hard time getting anybody to come up there and fish your pond so I just want to take one for the crowd and say that I will come up there and fish it for you. :D Good luck and please keep us updated.

Sounds great, Chris. I have a small pond here on my 20 acres. Thinking very seriously about making it bigger. 4 acres sounds like a good size to me. Keep us posted how the crappie thrive.
