it should start really quick or you'll burn it up water pumps are cheap and not hard to replace
Just bought a 16' V-bottom that had a 9.9 Evinrude on it. Got it home and pulled the carb and cleaned. Motor fired right off and idled great. My question, I had no water stream. Should I have water stream while running or only after the thermostat opens and how long should that take. I shut it down before I smoked it until I know the water pump is working.

Put an impeller in it,sounds like it needs one and they're cheap.

Yep, it sure sounds like a bad impeller

Might also check P tube for blockage. Spiders and other little creatures could be in there blocking things up. Happened to me last year.
I agree about the mud daubers and such, but I also would put an impeller in just to be sure.

Thanks guys, tore it down today and the impeller was gone and it had blockage in the hose. Glad I stopped.
