I was prepared for just about anything other than a snake, since they use heat to find their food. This one I've gotta fly past the biologist. Hope you parted ways amicably. - Roberta

If the sun was shinning on the black berry I would guess the berry would be considerably warmer than the surrounding brown leaves or green grass making the pit viper think he had found a warm blooded meal.

I sure love blackberry pie and we used to put on leather gloves, long sleeve shirt and hang a plastic gallon container (with the top cut out) on our belt and work our way into the thorny bushes. One arm we used to push or hold the thorny runners away from our face or body and pick the berries with our free hand and drop them into the milk container.

The worst bite we ever incured was chiggers and the pricks from the thorns never ran across any copperheads.

I now have thornless blackberries growing in my backyard so don't have the thorns to contend with and definitley no copperheads.

Do wish I had some nonvenomous serpents like a bull snake in my backyard to dine on the chipmonks that are everywhere. Keep thinking if I run across one I would bring it back home and turn it loose around the house foundation in the back yard but guess it would just leave and get run over in the street or probably scare the hell out of the neighbors if they ever saw it.

My black raspberries are starting to ripen, but we need rain or they will be small and sour. I'll pay the price of chigger bites for blackberry jam. Just about the best part of summer.
A cat or a dachshund will take care of your chipmunk problem but I have to warn you the doxie will dig them out, so you have to like holes in your yard ;-) - Roberta

Lot of them "tail shakers" at my hunting club. And I'm sure a few of them Copperheads also. So All the blackberry pickin' I'll be doin' will be 'round home.

I took the head of one of those things in my front yard the other day. First time I have ever seen one in the city limits.

That is an observation that should be sent to a snake person. Something like that may have never been documented before.
I would not have killed it. I would have left it alone to scare off the really nasty animals in my area - people. One of the thoughts I have been having lately is to release about a million poisonous snakes in my local park. I pick up about 5 GALLONS OF NEW LITTER EVERY DAY from the perimiter of my local 3 acre crappie & bass pond. The real problem is obvious. If you lived here you would have the same attitude.
    Sorry for my Crappie attitude.
