    Default Mechanics wiring help

For you guys that repair broken wires in and around the engine area or other places that has gas or oil contaminates.

This is a dual wall heat shrink that will not come apart due to gas, etc.
It is a special heat shrink that seals as it is heated. The standard heat shrink at radio shack and auto zone, etc is not dual wall and will not seal totally.

Liquid tape and electric tape will degenerate in oil.

I solder all connections. I use the western union splice before I solder.

If you have to use splices, use the self sealers.

There also exists some triple wall heat shrink . It ain't cheap.

Trying to help before I forget all this stuff.

I got asked this question, thus the post.

"western union splice" Hey, I learned to do a western union splice in 8th grade electric shop. You'd better explain how that's done for the young fellows.

Let me see if I can find a picture. Surely someone out there knows this. I might be obsolete......

I always have to look at the pictures before I teach the students how to splice. :D Scrapper might know how to do it and actually remember each time.

    Default 1926 copy

Thought you all might appreciate this old copyright (1926) instructional sheet.

I love that old stuff...thats one reason I posted the johnnyrude pics and videos from liquid nirvana...cool stuff!!

I have some old agriculture and farming books dating back to they 1910's.

Agrihawg's daddy had a bunch of circa 50's 60's 70's farming and agri books that we split up...pretty cool stuff!! Coolaid was 5cents a package..lol.

One of those splices is how I splice a fence back together...lol.

To splice wires anymore I use the 3M 6 hole wire splices. WORK GREAT!! got them from an electrician that used to coach our electricity team.

I really like the shrink wrap...may have to pick some of that up next time I rewire an engine. Would be REALLY nice on one of the old mercs with the bad wiring....one of the cases where the "lowest bidder" was REALLY not the best bidder...lol. Wiring on those engines were terrible!! insulation would flake off after just a few years...did not have any resistance to fumes.

    Good post!
